Four Cats on the Sidewalk

Trap Neuter  Return

We work to motivate and empower compassionate caretakers through education as well as equip them with necessary supplies, knowledge and support to carry out the process of TNR. Click here to view On Demand Webinars from Community Cat Podcasts.

TNR is a process whereby cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and then returned to their home territory.  TNR does not involve euthanasia nor relocation of the cats unless their lives are in immediate danger.  TNR is the most humane and effective way of controlling the community cat population. It improves the lives of cats, addresses community concerns, reduces complaints about cats, and stops the breeding cycle.

Cat Trap Fever offers full service TNR on a limited basis. It is our experience that when caregivers of colonies take part in the trapping, cats are trapped faster and easier than if strangers (CTF volunteers) do all of the work. We understand that not everyone can help with every aspect of TNR but most people can help with at least one task.

  • Sitting and watching traps and moving caught traps to a recovery location is a huge help to our organization.

  • Driving caught cats to/from their recovery location (We give you all the tools to protect your vehicle).

  • Setting traps is easy and anyone can do it! We will show you how.

  • Offering to hold your cats for recovery in a climate controlled environment is always a big help!

TNR is supported by all credible animal protection organizations including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA), as well as hundreds of TNR groups nationwide, and the countless individuals who carry out grassroots TNR programs.

Trap-Neuter-Return is the only humane and effective approach to community cat populations. Here are the three basic steps to this lifesaving process:

1. Trap: Humanely trap all the cats in a colony. A colony is a group of cats living outdoors together.

2. Neuter (or spay): Take the cats in their traps to a veterinarian or clinic to be neutered, vaccinated, and eartipped (the universal symbol of a neutered and vaccinated cat. Learn more at alleycat.org/Eartip).

3. Return: After the cats recover, return them to their outdoor home where they were trapped.

A critical step in the TNR process is having an appropriate space for the cats to stay during their recovery from surgery in addition to 1-2 days before the appointment for “prep”. This can be a smelly endeavour for a few days while the cats are there but once they have been recovered and released and the area is cleaned, the smell will dissipate. A garage, shed, workshop and empty commercial space are all great examples of recovery locations. We are looking for a fully enclosed structure with the following amenities:

  • Electricity with reliable heat/AC control

  • Within Crossville city limits or close to it

  • Available for a minimum of 5-7 consecutive days (usually Saturday – Thursday)

  • Hardwood, laminate or other easily sanitized flooring

  • Accessible to volunteers

  • Can easily fit two 6-foot folding tables
